APPELLO A SOSTEGNO DEL PACIFISTA UCRAINO YURII SHELIAZHENKO

A nome delle branche firmatarie della International Fellowship of Reconciliation (IFOR), esprimiamo il nostro sgomento e la nostra profonda preoccupazione per la decisione di accusare Yurii Sheliazhenko, segretario esecutivo del Movimento Pacifista Ucraino (UPM), di “giustificazione dell’aggressione russa”.
Come riportato, il 3 agosto 2023 Sheliazhenko è stato vittima di intimidazioni da parte del Servizio di Sicurezza dell’Ucraina (SBU) che ha fatto irruzione nel suo appartamento a Kiev e lo ha perquisito, sequestrando il suo computer portatile, il telefono cellulare e i documenti dell’UPM.
L’accusa si basa esclusivamente sul documento “Agenda di pace per l’Ucraina e il mondo”, adottato dall’UPM in occasione della Giornata internazionale della pace 2022, il 21 settembre, e successivamente inviato all’Ufficio del Presidente dell’Ucraina. Il documento invita alla pace, condanna l’aggressione russa, esorta a proteggere il diritto umano di rifiutarsi di uccidere e fa appello a una soluzione pacifica del conflitto armato.
Condividiamo l’allarme espresso da molte organizzazioni per gli eventi sopra citati.
Siamo membri dell’International Fellowship of Reconciliation, il più antico movimento per la pace a base spirituale, fondato nel 1914 con l’impegno alla nonviolenza e alla pace, rifiutando di portare armi e opponendosi alla guerra.
Il diritto all’obiezione di coscienza al servizio militare è un diritto umano inerente al diritto alla libertà di pensiero, coscienza e religione ed è direttamente collegato al diritto alla pace.
Sheliazhenko e l’UPM hanno lavorato diligentemente per la pace e hanno dato un contributo eccezionale per proteggere i diritti umani ovunque, anche nei contesti più difficili come la guerra. Sono difensori dei diritti umani che lavorano per proteggere i diritti degli obiettori di coscienza in Ucraina e per promuovere la pace.
Per queste stesse ragioni l’International Peace Bureau ha appena scelto di candidare l’UPM al Premio Nobel per la Pace 2024.
La difesa della pace e dei diritti umani è l’investimento più prezioso per il benessere dell’umanità. Sheliazhenko ha dimostrato e dichiarato in più occasioni il suo impegno per la nonviolenza e questo rappresenta la speranza concreta di un mondo senza la tragedia della guerra.
Chiediamo alle autorità ucraine e alla Corte che si pronuncerà sul caso di Sheliazhenko di ritirare tutte le accuse e di tutelare pienamente i suoi diritti umani, in linea con gli standard internazionali.
Assistiamo troppo spesso alla repressione e alla stigmatizzazione dei discorsi sulla pace e alla conseguente violazione dei diritti umani; nel vicino Paese dell’Ucraina, la Russia, manifestare contro la guerra è criminalizzato.
Ci appelliamo quindi al governo ucraino affinché protegga i discorsi di pace (#FreePeaceSpeech) nel Paese e garantisca la sicurezza di coloro che li sostengono e di coloro che si oppongono alla guerra a causa della loro coscienza.
La libertà di pensiero, di coscienza e di religione è un diritto inderogabile, come la libertà di espressione, e continua ad applicarsi indipendentemente dalla situazione di conflitto armato.

APPEAL TO SUPPORT UKRAINIAN PACIFIST YURII SHELIAZHENKO

On behalf of the signatory branches of the International Fellowship of Reconciliation (IFOR), we express our dismay and deep concern for the decision to charge Mr. Yurii Sheliazhenko, executive secretary of the Ukrainian Pacifist Movement (UPM), with “justification of Russian aggression”.

As reported, on August 3rd 2023 Mr. Sheliazhenko has been victim of harassment by Security Service of Ukraine’s (SBU) who broke into his apartment in Kyiv and searched it, seizing his laptop, mobile phone and documents of the UPM.

The charge is based solely on the document “Peace Agenda for Ukraine and the world” which has been adopted by the UPM on the 2022 International day of Peace, September 21st, and subsequently sent to the Office of the President of Ukraine. The document calls for peace, condemns the Russian aggression, urges protection of the human right to refuse to kill and appeals for a peaceful solution of the armed conflict.

We share the alarm expressed by many organizations over the above events.

We are members of the International Fellowship of Reconciliation, the oldest spiritual based peace movement, founded in 1914 with the commitment to nonviolence and peace by refusing to bear weapons and objecting to war.

The right to conscientious objection to military service is a human right inherent to the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion and is directly linked to the right to peace.

Mr. Sheliazhenko and the UPM have been diligently working for peace and have been making outstanding contributions to protect human rights anywhere even among the hardest context such as war is. They are human rights defenders working to protect the rights of conscientious objectors in Ukraine and to foster peace.

For these same reasons the International Peace Bureau has just chosen to nominate the UPM for the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize.

Standing for peace and human rights is the most precious investment for the wellbeing of humankind. Mr. Sheliazhenko has shown and declared on several occasions his commitment to nonviolence and this represents the actual hope for a world without the tragedy of war.

We call on the Ukrainian authorities and the Court which will rule on Sheliazhenko’s case to drop all charges and fully protect his human rights, in line with international standards.

We are witnessing too often the repression and stigma on peace speech and the consequent violation of human rights; in Ukraine’s neighbouring country, Russia, manifesting against war is criminalized.

We appeal therefore to the Ukrainian government to protect peace speech (#FreePeaceSpeech) in the country and ensure the safety of those who stand for it and of those who object war because of their conscience.

Freedom of thought, conscience and religion is a non-derogable right, like freedom of expression, and it continues to apply regardless of a situation of armed conflict.
